Baby, It’s Cold Outside

1-livingThe chill of winter has officially set in. Colorado saw multiple negative temperature days in December and it hasn’t warmed up a whole lot since. While the necessities of life like work and errands require us to still leave the house when it’s bone chilling cold, most of us prefer not to if we don’t have to.  Staying home in front of a fire with a cup of hot chocolate is the best way to ride out the freezing weather, but what if you don’t have a fireplace? Well, why not add one?

There are many reasons to add a fireplace to your home besides the obvious additional warmth. According to the National Center for Real Estate Research, fireplaces can increase the value of the average home by 6-12%! Fireplaces help a room feel homey and comfortable. They can also change the entire style and feel of a room.

7-denFireplaces come in a lot more options than your traditional brick mantel and hearth. They can be gas, wood, or electric – depending on your needs and what the home allows. They can be two sided, used as a room divider, or could be the focal point of the room. Once the functionality and location of the fireplace are determined, the area surrounding the fireplace can help add a new style to any room.

Once you decide you’re ready to add a fireplace to your home, there are both national and local code requirements that you need to be aware of. Since this addition can have a large impact on the safety of the home, there are structural considerations, venting requirements, and sometimes burn restrictions that may not allow a wood-burning fireplace. Fänas Architecture can help ensure that you are up to code as well as assist you in determining where and what fireplace fits best in your home.
