Winter Is In The Air

http-_mrg.bz_HbljwQAs the weather gets progressively cooler and there’s a bit of a bite in the air, you may find yourself beginning to turn that temperature dial up in your home.  Of course as that dial goes up, so does your heating bill. There are a few short term fixes to help, but if you’re really looking to improve the energy efficiency of your home then consider the following improvements.

Windows are an obvious area to upgrade if you feel like your home isn’t holding heat throughout the winter months. The addition of double or triple pane windows will greatly improve your home’s ability to keep heat in as well as keep it cool in the summer. This is also a great opportunity to add windows to rooms of the house to increase lighting.

Hot water heaters can be a surprising culprit of a high energy bill. According to www.energysavers.gov, water heating can make up 14-25% of a home’s energy consumption. Consider installing a tankless unit if you’re looking for a quick, easy replacement option. If you’re looking for the most eco-friendly option, then look at getting a solar water heater put in place. Either way, if your water heater is more than 7 years old, it may be time to start shopping for a replacement.

These improvements can be a high expense on the front end, but over the long run you’ll spend less monthly and you’ll be creating a more sustainable home in the process. If you complete these improvements by the end of 2013, you may also be eligible for a tax credit. Visit http://1.usa.gov/14JDaRg to learn more about qualifications and limitations.
