Do Your Research

Posted by: Elizabeth  /   Category: Uncategorized   /   Date: Jun 06, 2013

plansLast week we discussed the importance of why you need an architect when starting a remodel or new home build, but throughout the process, beginning to end, the best thing you can do for yourself is research. Research ideas, research architects, and continue to research throughout to make sure everything is going according to plan.

Dreaming up your perfect new room or new home is probably the most exciting stage, besides the finished product of course, so enjoy it! With new design and architecture galleries added everyday on the Internet, there’s a whole world of ideas at your fingertips. Pinterest even has a category dedicated to it now at http://pinterest.com/all/?category=architecture. So get searching and save anything that appeals to you, it’ll come in handy later.

The next step in your project will require a different kind of research from you. Instead of browsing ideas, you now need to begin browsing architects to work with. This is a major decision as they will be responsible for bringing your vision to life. Here are a few things to consider and look into before making your decision:

Look for architects in your area, but don’t be afraid to branch out
There’s more than likely a good architect working nearby, but ask around. Word of mouth is a powerful thing and you’re more likely to get an honest opinion from a friend. Or you can always ask your good friend, Google.

Narrow down your options and investigate
Once you have a few architects you’re interested in, get the details on them. Look for reviews, check their background, and review their portfolios. Getting an idea of their past work will help you to see if they’ll be a good fit for your project.

Ask questions
Don’t be afraid to ask anything and everything that comes to mind. You’re hiring them as the expert and they are there to provide you with answers. It’s always better to ask than to feel like there’s something left on the table that you’re unsure of. The American Institute of Architects has developed a great list of  25 questions to ask your architect so be sure to take a look before your initial meeting.
